We are in the process of setting up Argus for sharp usage to be used within a team of support-personell.

However, we have a bunch of questions.

A) Is it possible to configure Argus to not send alarms during the "sleeping hours" of the day? I understand it can be solved by a custom notify-method, but is there some more generic way to handle this, or an existing written method to filter this?

B) Is it possible to use external authentication sources? (LDAP, PAM, .htaccess)

C) I would like to ask my MySQL-servers if replication is up. The way I normally do this is by issuing the SQL query "SHOW SLAVE STATUS;". This feeds me a table back, where I have to check to columns for the value "Yes". Can I somehow select columns from a result in a SQL query?

Besides setting an override cron, I don't think so.

Easiest way may be to have a cron that redirects your destination 
mailbox to the bitbucket.  So if argus sends notifies to 
argus_alert@example.com, you could have a cron that just throws away 
that mail during certain hours.

Several people have written plugins; argus is easily configurable to 
authenticate against any mechanism.  See the contrib/ directory in the 
argus tarball (argus_pam.tar, web_auth_*.pl)

Thank you for a great product.

We are trying to launch our argus-based monitoring services, but are having a couple of issues.

First of all, we've discovered something I can't call anything but a bug. We are using a general notify-method on our entire range of monitored services.

If we specify in the config-header
 Resolver 
 notify: mail:someone@host
We simply don't get any notifications (and debugging aren't showing the value has been set), whilst if we specify it like
 notify: mail:someone@host
 Resolver
We will get the results fine.

Is there some explanation for this/patch to fix it?


Secondly, we have a problem with how overrides work. In our Top-node, we are using a mix of hosts and groups as children.
* If we override a host within a group, our top-view shows a couple of overridden tests immediately, even if the tests are not failed tests.
* However, if we override the entire group of hosts, we don't see anything in the main-view, and if one of the tests fails, it shows up as a downed service (not override).
* If we override a host that is directly specified in the Top-node, it won't show up as overridden, and if it's services fails, it shows up as down (not under override).
So, to summarize, the web-views of Argus seems to be a bit inconsistent in how an overridden host/group is interpreted, at least from my POV. Notifications behave like expected, though. Any explanation for this?

The example argus config file contains a snippet
that can be used to check if there is a new version of argus:

The example includes a comment:

    # if you use this example, the author appreciates you
    # leaving the frequency at once per day, so as not to
    # overburden his web server
    frequency:      86400
    retries:        5
    retrydelay:     600


if you are using this, can you please verify that you have not
inadvertently lowered these settings.

Is this a general "OMFG you're killing my server" request?

I have 2 of these running, one for general release and one for 
snapshot..  Both of which are set to the defaults you defined...

Quite a handy tool as I use it to watch for other software updates such 
as ClamAV, Spamassassin, and even the Cymru Bogon list..  :)

Yikes, mine were way down.  I copied someone else's config ;P
I fixed mine to 

renotify:   180
frequency:      86400
retrydelay:     600
retries:        5
timeout:        15
